Oslo's Rail Upgrade Transforms Strømmen Into Major Commuter Suburb by 2030
Rail corridor improvements will turn the area around Strømmen into a residential hub for Oslo workers by 2030.
How we reported this

A 4.2 billion kroner upgrade to the Oslo-Lillestrøm rail line, approved by Bane NOR on 10 July 2026, will add two new stations and electrified tracks that cut travel times to Oslo Central Station to 18 minutes from Strømmen.
Oslo Kommune faces a housing shortfall of 45,000 units by 2035, and faster connections to the capital now make outer districts viable for daily commuters who previously avoided longer journeys on older diesel services.
The project targets former warehouse land along the Alna river in Strømmen and extends into parts of the Groruddalen valley, where the city’s 2025-2030 growth plan already reserves sites for 8,500 apartments within 800 metres of the new stops.
Bane NOR data released this month show average apartment prices in Strømmen at 62,400 kroner per square metre in June 2026, up 9 per cent from the same month last year, while nearby Lillestrøm recorded 71,800 kroner per square metre.
Housing and Transport Links Take Shape
Developers have submitted plans for 2,200 units at the old industrial site next to Strømmen station, with the first phase scheduled to break ground in spring 2027 once track works reach the area.
Oslo’s municipal transport agency, Ruter, will extend two bus routes from the new stations to Majorstuen and Nydalen, creating direct links that avoid the city centre for east-bound residents.
What Buyers and Sellers Should Do Now
Prospective buyers should check the Oslo Kommune planning portal for the exact zoning maps due for release on 1 September 2026, while current owners near the proposed stations can expect valuation reviews once construction contracts are signed later this year.
